Wild Survival Tips: Survive Outdoors?

Wild Survival

In This article we are going to talk about Wilderness Emergency Survival Guide, Wilderness Survival Shelter Tips and Basic Wilderness Survival Tips Wild Survival Its end of the year, which implies a certain something: backwoods outdoors. Here are some useful survival tips for on the off chance that you ever end up stranded in nature:

Wilderness Survival Shelter Tips

Here Are the Basic Wilderness Survival Tips for you:

Outdoor survive

Building a Shelter

Survival Wild Luckily, it’s anything but difficult to manufacture a shelter. All you require are a couple of sticks and a covering. Dislike, say, constructing an enduring relationship. That is obviously unimaginable. Simply locate a substantial shake and lean a few sticks against it. Toss the covering over them. That should protect you.

Getting Your Bearings

In the Wilderness Emergency Survival Guide, Survival Wild Search for greenery. On the northern side of the equator, greenery develops for the most part on the north side of trees. It couldn’t be any more obvious, I’m not directionless. I have a real existence plan. I’m composing this survival article, on spec, and afterwards, I will go to culinary school. Or on the other hand, possibly I’ll create something for “Shark Tank.” It doesn’t make a difference. I’m just thirty-two. On the off chance that you can’t discover greenery, pursue the stars or something.

Discovering Edible Plants

Wild Survival For what reason am I expounding on palatable plants? I needed to be a sci-fi author. I ought to expound on space plants. You know—Captain Sonar punched his dynamic clench hand into the contorted mouth of the aware moon bush! God, that is tedious. I think I utilize an excessive number of modifiers in my composition. I ought to resemble Hemingway and keep it straightforward. Commander Sonar punched the moon bush.

Gathering Drinking Water

Wild Survival Blah, blah, blah, you require water. Hello, here’s a thought: take a stab at drinking your tears. On the off chance that you require something to make you cry, consider my life. My sweetheart simply abandoned me, regardless I cut my jeans into shorts, and I eat a bowl of Cap’n Crunch for two out of three suppers consistently. How did this occur? For what reason wouldn’t I be able to bear the cost of genuine shorts?!

Enduring a Bear Encounter

Screw it! Wild Survival Simply covers yourself in nectar mustard and bounce in the bear’s mouth. I ponder, on the off chance that I did that, would Kate go to my burial service? Would she give a tribute? She’d likely bring a date. God, I miss her.

Motioning for Help

I surmise there were signs. Kate never appeared to be content with me. She was continually contrasting me with her moronic companion Greg. “Greg claims his flat.” “Greg wears socks with his shoes.” Well, I never preferred Greg. He constantly made me feel both physically and rationally mediocre. To be reasonable, I am sub-par compared to him in both ways. Yet at the same time, he didn’t need to make me feel it.

Remaining Optimistic

You know, possibly this is generally advantageous. Kate leans towards the better things throughout everyday life, such as taking taxis and not dozing on a futon. Moreover, presently I can concentrate on my intimate romance: parkour. That’s right, things will be incredible. For whatever length of time that I discover someplace to set up shelter before it gets any darker. I most likely ought to have composed this in a coffeehouse.

Things You Need to Survive in the Wilderness

Wild Survival On the off chance that you can’t take a prepared survivalist with you to the wild, take the following best thing – his stuff. We addressed last-man-standing Smith Kay, champ of the HISTORY’S unique reality arrangement Alone, which sends 10 master survivalists into the timberlands of Canada outfitted just with 10 instruments based on their personal preference. To enable you to make it the wild, Smith discusses the 10 things he picked and why you should pick the equivalent… that is on the off chance that you need to really make due for 56+ days as he did.

A huge 3qt cooking pot

Shock – you require water to endure and a pot in which to sanitize and bubble it. As per Smith, a pot is one of the main three things a survivalist ought to bring, if not the most essential. While bubbled lake water likely won’t taste extraordinary, it certainly beats a devastating instance of giardia.

A Convenient Saw

Utilized for more than possibly liberating an appendage while stuck in a difficult situation, the saw is quite extraordinary for shorter outings into the wild, because of its lightweight nature, exactness, and implausibility of causing unintentional real mischief.

Bed

While you could actually make it without a portable bed, for what reason would you need to? In addition to the fact that it provides protection, you’re shielding yourself from the wet, cool ground. Convey a tangle to put under that hiking bed and you’re basically living in forest extravagance.

A Cleave Everything Hatchet

Every one of the ten challengers took the hatchet with them to the interminably stormy forests of Vancouver Island. The hatchet is a survivalist basic for each landscape, and not at all like the saw, can be honed and looks boss when matched with goliath blue draft creatures.

A Start Delivering Ferro Bar

A Ferro bar is likewise one of the best three things a survivalist should convey consistently. It’s a hunk of metal – the man-made ferrocerium – that delivers a shower of sparkles when scratched against a hard surface, more often than not a blade. While it takes a tad of training to utilize, a Ferro pole is superior to anything the option: contingent upon vitality devouring neolithic techniques, such as rubbing sticks together or buckle enchantment.

A Multi-Reason Metal Water Jug Or Flask

A container can be utilized for a large group of various things – not simply remaining hydrated. You can utilize it to cook after all other options have been exhausted, particularly if the flask is treated steel or aluminium. You can bubble water in it to convey your supply starting with one place then onto the next, assemble nourishment, or even burrow with it on the off chance that you’ve completely lost your brain.

A Little Check Gill Net For Making A Crisis Nourishment Supply

A gill net resembles a huge volleyball net that can be set up and left unattended as you approach your everyday survival errands. Imbecilic as-hellfire angle swims directly into the thing, getting themselves. In addition to the fact that it is less exertion than genuine angling, imperative when you’re making an effort not to consume any valuable calories, but rather it can likewise be utilized as a catch to get wild amusement.

A Flexible Blade

Joining the pot and the Ferro pole in the gathering of best three most essential things to have in a survival circumstance is a blade – and an extraordinary sharp cutting edge will do. Smith picked the kukri cut for its capacity to perform out of extent to its size. It’s thick and sufficiently substantial to part wood like an axe or a blade, however in the event that you keep it sharp, a kukri cut is additionally ready to do some fine work, such as cleaning fish or cutting spoons, just on the off chance that you’re anticipating organization and truly need a few spoons.

A 4.5lb Wire For “Hello, I May Require This… ”

Smith was the main individual who wound up taking the wire. It’s the kind of thing that you may neglect until the point that you truly require it. It could help with anything from building catches to trap amusement or in the sanctuary building.

A 250yd Single Fiber Line With 20 Grouped Snares For Angling

Smith didn’t have to utilize this thing to such an extent, in light of the fact that the gill net didn’t require as quite a bit of his time and vitality. Nonetheless, and this is a major be that as it may, it’s a decent reinforcement, particularly in the event that you realize your area has a fishy abundance. All the more critically, a gill net that gets angle all at once is illicit in many places and is just to be utilized in crisis survival circumstances… like on the off chance that you’ve been lost for 10 minutes or something.

There’s something both energizing and terrifying about making due in the wild all alone. A few people have trekked off into the wild all alone to test themselves and have lost their lives simultaneously. Others have gotten lost while climbing or mountaineering sheerly unintentionally yet made due in spite of all chances. What should you do in the event that you abruptly end up stranded in the wild’ How will you endure

Your First Priority Is Water.

You can make it in the wild for even fourteen days with next to no sustenance. Notwithstanding, you can possibly endure two or three days in the event that you don’t have water.

Where would you be able to discover water? Consider this inquiry sensibly. On account of gravity, water dependably looks for the least conceivable spot. The base of a slope, gorge or mountain is a decent place to discover water. In the event that you end up in a desert, search for something green. Where there is green vegetation, there is water beneath that is bolstering the plant. Green plants can likewise give you water. Firmly tie a plastic pack around a green tree appendage and after that hold up as water gathers. This technique can deliver as much as 33% of some water in a solitary day.

Be that as it may, discovering the water isn’t sufficient. In the event that you drink polluted water, you could be dead in a couple of days at any rate in light of waterborne sicknesses. Realizing how critical clean water is, never adventure excessively far into the forested areas without a decent water purifier.

Here are the Wilderness Survival Shelter Tips and Basic Wilderness Survival Tips you need to be aware:

Pack A Survival Kit.

A water purifier or water cleansing tablets ought to be one of the main things you put into your survival unit. What different supplies are must-have things when attempting to make due in the wild?

Blade: After water cleaning supplies, the following most critical wild survival thing you can have is a blade. A decent blade for the wild has the accompanying attributes:

It has a settled sharp edge instead of a foldable cutting edge.

It is a solid handle, implying that the metal piece of the blade reaches out through the length of the handle.

The edge is between four inches and six crawls long.

In spite of the fact that not basic, it’s likewise valuable to have a blade that has seen teeth someplace on it.

Having a certified Swiss Army Knife or multi-instrument blade to enhance your survival cut is likewise a smart thought.

Never bring a stumble into the wild that is longer than a couple of hours without an emergency treatment pack. Moreover, the further you will be from human progress, the more hearty your pack ought to be. At any rate, take something with you to treat an injury, including things like athletic tape, bandage, tweezers and an antibacterial topical balm. Some sort of over-the-counter agony medicine to cut down swelling and fevers is likewise a smart thought. In the event that you plan on being in a territory with the exceptional sun, accept sunscreen and lip salve too. Alter the emergency treatment things you take depends on where you’ll be and what individual therapeutic issues you may have.

Fire Starting Equipment

A couple of little lighters are a smart thought, but on the other hand, it’s valuable to take two or three candles and something to begin a fire with on the off chance that the lighters come up short on liquid. Rock and steel are one of the least demanding approaches to begin a fire with no matches or lighter. Keep a rock and steel unit, including burn fabric and something to fill in as a tinder settle, for example, rope filaments, in a waterproof holder. The candles are valuable since they are anything but difficult to light and would then be able to be utilized to begin a bigger fire.

Crisis Blanket: A crisis cover, otherwise called a space cover or sun-powered cover, is a light-weight mylar cover that traps body warm. In the event that for reasons unknown you lose your portable bed, get your camping bed wet or need additional warmth, a crisis cover is a fantastic option to your survival pack. It can likewise serve as a sun reflector to flag an inquiry party that you’re adjacent.

Guide and Compass: Don’t ever endeavor a trek in the forested areas without a guide or compass. Utilized effectively, these two things will enable you to return to human progress more than everything else on this rundown.

Consider The Food Situation.

In the event that you don’t have any water, you shouldn’t eat in the event that you can encourage it since processing requires a great deal of water. Notwithstanding, when you discover water, you’ll likely need sustenance. Ideally, you haven’t wandered out into the forested areas without some sustenance as of now on you. When you understand that you’re lost or stranded, apportion out the nourishment you have left and make an arrangement for getting more.

It may entice eat a few berries or bite on a few leaves once you begin getting eager. All things considered, however, the normal sound grown-up can get by for very nearly three weeks without nourishment. In this manner, except if you truly believe you will be stuck in the wild without nourishment for, in excess of a long time, you might not have any desire to go out on a limb of eating. Eating the wrong berries could make you debilitated and slaughter you quicker than starvation.

One thing you can eat with relative security are grasshoppers and most different creepy crawlies. These bugs convey their very own bugs, so make certain to cook them first to execute any destructive parasites. Evacuate their heads and wings first. Try not to eat caterpillars or brilliantly hued bugs as they can be toxic.

Remain Warm And Dry.

You’re undeniably bound to pass on in the wild in view of hypothermia than starvation. In case you’re lost, it’s presumably a smart thought to make a protected, warm camp in one spot and trust that assistance will touch base than to remain progressing. Ideally, regardless you’ll have a tent, covering and additionally camping bed with you. On the off chance that you don’t, utilize your survival blade to make a fast shelter.

Wild survival may appear to be a major experience. It’s most certainly not. Getting lost or stranded in the forested areas, or taking a risk by heading into the forested areas underprepared, is no amusement. Ensure you never take off into the forested areas ill-equipped. Regardless of whether you’re arranging a speedy day climb, having a survival pack with you is a smart thought in the event that you end up in a direct outcome imaginable. A sudden tempest could come up; you could get lost; you could harm yourself and need to sit tight in one place for help. On the off chance that you have the survival unit recorded above and keep yourself quiet, notwithstanding, you ought to endure your nerve-racking wild involvement.

Ark Survival Evolved -ARK Survival Tips for Beginners

In this article you are going to know about ARK Survival Tips for Beginners.

Ark: Survival Evolved (stylized as RK) is a 2017 survival video game developed by Studio Wildcard, in association with Instinct Games, Efecto Studios and Virtual Basement. In the game, players must survive stranded on an island filled with roaming dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals, natural hazards, and potentially hostile human players.

The game is played from a third-person or first-person perspective and its open world is navigated on foot or by riding a prehistoric animal. Players can use firearms and improvised weapons to defend against humans and hostile creatures, with the ability to build bases as defense on land and over certain creatures.

The game has both single player and multiple options. Multiple option allows to configure member tribes on server. The maximum number of Clan Mates varies from each server. In this mode, all domesticated dinosaurs and building structures are usually shared among the members. There is a PvE mode where players cannot fight each other.

Development began in October 2014, when it was first released on PC as an early access title in mid-2015. The development team conducted research into the animals’ physical appearance, but obtained a creative license for gaming purposes.

Egypt-based developer Games Instinct has been contracted to facilitate game development. The game was released in August 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, OS X and Linux, with releases for Android, iOS and Nintendo Switch devices in 2018. It received mixed reviews overall, with criticism for its difficulty “sanctioning” and its reliance on grinding. Several expansions have been released as downloadable content. The game spawned two separate games in March 2018 – the virtual reality game ARK Park and sandbox survival game PixArk – and two companion apps: A-Calc in October 2015, and Dododex in August 2017.

Play

Ark: Survival Evolved is an action-adventure survival game in an open world environment with a dynamic day and night cycle and is played in either a third-person or a first-person perspective. To stay alive, players must create a base, with fire and weapons; Additional activities, such as taming and feeding dinosaurs, require more resources. [4] The game world, known as the “Ark”, is approximately 48 km2 (19 square miles) in size: [5] There is approximately 36 km2 (14 square miles) of land with 12 km2 (4.6 square miles) of ocean. 6)

There are currently 176 creatures filling the astronomy world. In the first versions of the game, almost all creatures were real dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures, and as the story progressed, mythical creatures like wyvern, manticore and phoenix were added. As the expansions have been released, completely original creatures, like Karkinos and velonasaur also make their way into the game as well as original robotic creatures like the enforcer and scouts.

One of the primary game mechanics of the game is the taming of creatures. The majority of creatures can be tamed by the player, although some, such as Meganeura or Titanomyrma, cannot.

The method of taming differs creature from creature. Most of the critters are “violent” taming, which means players must knock the creature off with calming projectiles such as a tranq dart or with sharp weapons, such as a club. Often times players will need to keep a sedated dinosaur for the duration of taming. Some dinosaurs take longer than others to tame and thus require more drugs. Players are able to use narcoberries, or craft drugs from narcoberries and spoiled meats.

Once out, the player must feed the creature his favorite food, such as berries for herbivores or raw meat for carnivores. Different foods help to tame animals at varying speeds. Tame most critters more effectively – and faster – with a food called kibble, which is an ingredient made using eggs from another creature.

Some creatures can also be passively tamed, by approaching them and feeding them carefully. Once the creature is tamed, it will follow the orders of the player who tame them. Also, it can ravage most of the creatures, thus allowing the player to take advantage of the creature’s abilities, such as flying or fast underwater movement. [4]

When riding over certain creatures, players may still be able to use weapons. Can also be used to carry items, and players can issue offensive and defensive orders to them; For example, a group of Utahraptors could be assigned to defend the base, or a group of Triceratops could be ordered to attack an enemy base. [4] Some large creatures, such as Dinosaurs or Mosasaurus,
It could be a building platform placed on the backs, giving mobile players, albeit small, a base. [7] The game also features many other animals, such as the dodo bird, the tiger with a hand

How to Purify Water in The Forest for Survival

water filtering

Filter Water

Hey what’s up guys. Shawn Ryan vigilance elite here with Jeff Reid from frozen Trident kennel. Hey we’re gonna talk today about How to Purify Water in the Forest. So as clean as this all looks and it is clean it still needs to be filter. Why don’t you tell us. Yeah so yeah we’re right where we’re at you can see what’s around us. But what is up the stream right now.

We don’t know there could be a dead animal in there bear shit moose. Like there’s bacteria in this stream right now. That’s why you filter it in a survival situation if you drink the water unfiltered not a good thing. Because you get sick yeah you’re on your own. No one’s taken care yet so that’s why filtering water is important. We’re not going to be out here squeezing water out of bear shit or moose shit. Maybe if we see a unicorn shit I might do that.

How to Purify Water in the Forest

Filter Water Through Plastic Bags

Anyways we’re just going to go over a couple different ways to do it. And stuff to put your water in. So this is a real popular one I see a lot of people use in are these little plastic bags. They’re great and they’re compact but I hate them. Because if you get a hole in this thing. You in this is all you have to put your water in. Then you’re kind of screwed so another reason those things are bad. I mean I talk a lot about cold weather up here. Because I mean most of time it’s cold this thing plastic. When it gets cold it’s going to be brittle and break apart. So that’s what I recommend.

Nalgene bottle these things are pretty much indestructible. Slam it on pretty much anything it’s not going to break. They make all kinds of pouches you can put these things in. When it is freezin that will keep your water from freezing once it’s filtered. You can take it back to your campsite or your shelter or whatever you’re staying in.

Yeah you know a lot of the water filters that you can get out there. And will screw right on top of this damn thing. So that the water goes directly in there. Then you know you’re good to go alright guys. So the first method we’re going to talk about is iodine tablets right here.

Iodine Tablets

These are I think it says 400 milligrams. So this will treat up to one liter of water or 34 ounces. That what’s that thirty-two perfect thousand milliliters. Yeah liter yep go ahead fill it up. You want to make sure you’re getting all that in there. Because definitely wanna get sick. All right see it dissolving in there. It’ll dissolve now. What you do it’s not immediate you don’t dump that in there.

Start drinking it it’s going to take four hours for this to work. You throw it in there throw it in your pack. You get on with whatever you’re doing. Then four hours later you’re good enough to drink it. So that’s one way not necessarily the most tasteful way. But it does or the easiest way yeah. But it’ll get you out of a pinch. They’re super light to carry around with this. I know that works. I’ve used that before.

How to Purify Water in the Forest Through MSR Pump

Alright guys the second way that we’re gonna show. Is this little MSR pump. So basically what you do unwind this hose like. You get this little piece of styrofoam here. This kind of helps you control the depth. You don’t want this thing drag it on the bottom of the river. Or you can even use this in stagnant water. You can pump this and it just sucks the water up through this tube. Through the filter and this thing you can screw right on top of that Nalgene bottle. That we were talking about at the very beginning.

Let’s pump it like that. Control your depth good to go. One thing you need to do after you’re done. For your your trip is you just boil it and sanitize it for the next time. Otherwise it’s gonna start getting all moldy and nasty and shit. I want to make sure you clean these things when you can. How we want to do this. I’ll just show you it doesn’t pump this. Isn’t gonna be like a hose. It’s a little more like a trickle.

I’ll show you how much water we’re actually going to get out of it. At a time make this thing a little deeper dragon. So that’s about as much as they’re gonna get. Keep pumping so now screw this right on top by Nalgene bottle. To get this back out to some depth just keep pumping.

I think they say it’s about 80 pumps for this to fill this whole. Thing up I’m not going to fill the whole thing up. Just for times sake but there it is you can see it’s super clean. You can drink it right after pretty good.

Filter Water With Life Straw

Now let’s go to Jeff with the next method in how to purify water in forest. I got the LifeStraw right here. This thing’s pretty badass. Super lightweight doesn’t take up hardly any room. It’s easy to use if you don’t know how to use it. You look at the picture. It just shows you popping these things off putting it into water. Use it like a normal straw. So easy a Navy SEAL can use it. I’m good yeah. When you’re done using it. It just says to blow out all the extra water out. So you don’t have any contamination for your next use. Super easy to use pretty awesome thing.

I’m going to say this is probably my favorite filter. One of the good things about this instead of those ones. That you have to keep pumping all the time to fill this thing up. The nice thing about the LifeStraw is you need to go away from a water source. It’s easy to fill up whatever container. You’re using put the lid on it. Anytime you want to drink just do this best way. To do it easy on you there’s not any pumping. This thing will filter up to 4,000 liters.

Filter Water Through Boiling

This thing will last a long time a fourth method is just grabbing the water. If you got a fire and boiling it. They say you got to boil it for what 60 seconds. One minute so you get it boiling you. Let it roll once you get a rolling boil no less in not one minute. If you’re up like a mile high. Or if you’re you up in the altitude three minutes. Me personally I’m just gonna blow it for three minutes.

Anyway just to be safe you’re always on the side of safety with water. You know what make yourself sick. So we just went over what four methods on. How to purify your water three of them are products one of them is fire. But you can find these products in my Amazon. Chuck Jeff felt frozen try that on Instagram subscribe to my channel. And see you next week good Barry what.

Survival kit

Emergency equipment

A survival kit is a package of basic tools and supplies prepared as an aid to survival in an emergency. Civil and military aircraft, lifeboats, and spacecraft are equipped with survival kits.

Survival kits, in a variety of sizes, contain supplies and tools to provide a survivor with basic shelter against the elements, help him or her to keep warm, meet basic health and first aid needs, provide food and water, signal to rescuers, and assist in finding the way back to help. Supplies in a survival kit normally contain a knife (often a Swiss army knife or a multi-tool), matches, tinder, first aid kit, bandana, fish hooks, sewing kit, and a flashlight.

Civilians such as forestry workers, surveyors, or bush pilots, who work in remote locations or in regions with extreme climate conditions may also be equipped with survival kits. Disaster supplies are also kept on hand by those who live in areas prone to earthquakes or other natural disasters. For the average citizen to practice disaster preparedness, some towns will have survival stores to keep survival supplies in stock.

The American Red Cross recommends an emergency preparedness kit that is easy to carry and use in the event of an emergency or disaster.[1]

General contents[edit]

The general contents of an emergency survival kit depend on the location. Basic components in a survival kit address the needs of first aid, food, water, shelter, navigation, and signalling.[2]

Shelter and warmth[edit]

A variety of materials are recommended for emergency shelters, and vary between geographic regions. Options often included in survival kits may consist of:

  • Reflective “aluminized” (Mylar coated) space blanket or survival blanket to retain body heat (and signal)
  • Lightweight poncho for protection against wind and rain (and for collecting rain)
  • “Tube tent” or bivvy bag
  • Tarp with grommets or tie-tapes (best if nylon or polyester)
  • Large plastic trash bag as poncho, expedient shelter roof, or rain collector
  • Ferrocerium rod (AKA “Metal match”, “Hot Spark”, “Firesteel”, “Magnesium fire starter”) and fire striker for fire-starting, Fire piston or Solar Spark Lighter
  • Waterproof matches or lighter
  • Cotton balls or pads smeared with petroleum jelly for fire starting (can be carried in 35 mm film container, zip lock baggie or heat-sealed inside large diameter plastic straw)
  • Catalytic heater and bottled gas fuel
  • Emergency sleeping bag great for shelter and warmth

Health and first aid[edit]

First aid kits will often include a combination of the following:

  • Bandages such as sterile combine dressing and gauze pads
  • Adhesive tape, and gauze tape or disinfectant pads
  • A 30-day supply of personal prescription medication
  • Antibiotic cream/Rubbing alcohol
  • Burn cream
  • Aspirin
  • Sunscreen (where appropriate, above 30 SPF)
  • 100% UV protective sunglasses (“UV 400”) (protects eyes from harmful UV radiation. Polarized glasses are not necessarily UV protective, but aid with glare only)
  • Surgical suture (for sewing up major wounds)

Food and water[edit]

Most survival kits include sustenance for short periods of time, to be used and replenished before contents spoil.

  • Water in sealed containers for dry areas, or water purification tablets or household bleach in areas where water is available but may be contaminated. For emergency water purification see: water purification techniques
  • Canteen full of water, and a filter if needed
  • Heavy duty aluminum foil to create a distillation tube to remove salt from salt water during boiling/condensation. Must have another receptacle to collect condensation.
  • Canned food, Meals Ready-to-Eat (MRE), high-energy foods such as chocolate or emergency food bars, or dry food items such as dried fruits, cereals, nuts or roasted grams
  • Fishing line and gear (fish hooks, lures, and split shot leads)
  • Snare wire
  • Gillnetting (for emergency fishing)
  • Spear tip (for spearing fish and other small animals)

Signaling, navigation and reference[edit]

A U.S. Marine signalling an aircraft with a signal mirror.
Since the primary goal of a survival kit for lost or injured persons is rescue, this part of the kit may be considered the most essential. Key elements for rescue include:

  • Distress radiobeacon
  • Whistle
  • Signal mirror
  • High power LED light (able to have batteries replaced, and carry an extra battery), white lens, with signaling capabilities. Strobe versions are available for some lights. Use lithium cells only, due to superior shelf life.
  • Flare: three fires in a triangle is the international distress signal
  • Laser pointer (or green laser) with lithium batteries, for superior signaling range. Laser pointers have resulted in at least one rescue: during the night in August 2010 two men and a boy were rescued from marshland after their red laser pen was spotted by rescue teams.[3]
  • Surveyor’s tape – orange or chartreuse for marking location for rescuers
  • Pen/pencil and paper for leaving notes to rescuers about direction of travel
  • Compass. Analog watch can also be used to determine orientation when the sun is visible – See direction finding using a watch
  • Trail maps/charts (if location is known in advance)
  • Survival manual for technique reference
  • Glow stick

Multipurpose tools or materials[edit]

Survival kit tools emphasize portability and versatility. Tools recommended for many types of survival kit include:

Bow saws about 24 inches (61 cm) in length are lightweight and fast-cutting.
A small Snow Peak portable stove running on MSR gas and the stove’s carrying case

  • Fixed-blade knife, or multitool such as a Swiss Army knife.
  • Can opener such as the P-38 or the P-51
  • Heavy-duty needle and thread for repairing clothing and equipment
  • Red or orange plastic bag(s) or trash bags
  • Sturdy cord or “550” parachute cord for setting up a tarpaulin and snaring small animals
  • Hatchet with sheath for cold conditions, or machete for tropical conditions (shelter and fire)
  • Camp stove or some type of gas burner and fuel such as bottled propane or Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)
  • Candles for light, signaling, fire-starting. Candles made of edible materials such as tallow or beeswax can also be used as a source of calories.
  • Metal billycan or “water bottle” for water storage, boiling, purification, cooking
  • Compact saw such as Japanese style backsaw with coarse teeth (folding models available). Bow saws can quickly cut larger diameter limbs and small to medium thick trees, and Folding saws can be small enough to fit into a kit, but big enough to cut small to medium diameter limbs, and possibly smaller trees.
  • Solar charger
  • Helmet
  • Bandanna or scarf
  • Bullet proof armor (such as soft body armor for pistol calibers). This can be used for protection in urban settings. Bullet proof armor may be placed in a carrier and worn on the body, or may be inserted into a bag or backpack.

Lifeboat survival kits[edit]

Lifeboat survival kits are stowed in inflatable or rigid lifeboats or life rafts; the contents of these kits are mandated by coast guard or maritime regulations. These kits provide basic survival tools and supplies to enable passengers to survive until they are rescued. In addition to relying on lifeboat survival kits, many mariners will assemble a “ditch bag” or “abandon ship bag” containing additional survival supplies. Lifeboat survival kit items typically include:

Safety equipment

  • Life jackets
  • First aid kit
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Bucket

Communications and navigation

  • Compass
  • Distress beacons or (EPIRBs) to alert the Cospas-Sarsat rescue consortium, an international satellite-based search and rescue distress alert agency and identify the registered beacon owner’s specific information from their registration file
  • Red flare, rocket parachute flare, and/or smoke signal flare
  • Laser pointer for signaling aircraft (red is color of distress, but green color is higher power and will be seen farther), with lithium cells, in double waterproof plastic pouch (pointers of high power are a theoretical hazard to eyes of low-flying pilots at night)
  • Radar reflector (to help rescuers locate the raft)
  • Lighter
  • Lantern and fuel, the fuel doubles as firestarter
  • Radio transceiver, standard VHF marine when operating near inland shore, 121.5 MHz AM VHF guard channel capable aircraft band transceiver to contact rescuers and high overflying commercial and military aircraft visible by contrails, an optional amateur radio if a licensed radio amateur, (see Ham Radio) or an AM/FM/Weather/Shortwave radio receiver to receive precise time for celestial navigation as well as weather information
  • GPS navigation device

Food and water

  • A knife, multi-tool, and/or Swiss army knife [4]
  • Fishing kit
  • Rainwater collection equipment
  • Seawater desalination kit
  • Water (typically 3 liters/person/day)
  • Emergency high-calorie rations/food (not as important as water). Chocolate has a superior calorie/weight ratio
  • Hatchet

Other tools and boating items

  • Waterproof flashlight
  • Heaving line
  • Ladder
  • Bailer
  • Bilge pump
  • Boat hook
  • Sea anchor (also called a “sea drogue”)

Military kits[edit]

Survival kits for military aviators are often modified according to the environment of operations:

  • In desert areas, survival kits may have more water and sunscreen, and have additional items such as shade hats, a compass, a whistle, medical equipment, tinder, matches, and sun glasses.
  • In tropical areas, a survival kit may have mosquito head netting, additional insect repellent, anti-fungal cream, a machete, water purification tablets, foot powder, matches, a flint strike, a compass, a wire saw, a space blanket, medical equipment (gauze pads, elastic gauze bandage, antiseptic creams, anti-malaria tablets, anti-infection tablets, bandages, etc.), salt tablets, a fishing kit, snare wire, extra socks, a candle, a signal mirror, flares, a sewing kit, safety pins, tinder, tape, a whistle, and rations.
  • In arctic or alpine areas, survival kits may have additional cold weather clothing (winter hats and gloves), sleeping bags, chemical “hand warmer” packets, sun glasses/snow goggles, snowshoes, a collapsible shovel, a snare wire for small animals, a frying pan, a camp stove, camp stove fuel, a space blanket, matches, a whistle, a compass, tinder, medical equipment, a flint strike, a wire saw, extra socks and a tent designed for arctic use.
  • For personnel who are flying over large bodies of water, in additional to wearing a survival suit over cold water, a survival kit may have additional items such as a small self inflating raft to get the aircrewman out of cold or predator infested waters, flotation vests, sea anchor, fishing nets, fishing equipment, fluorescent sea marking dye, pyrotechnical signals, a survival radio and/or radio-beacon, formerly a distress marker light replaced by a flashing strobe, formerly a seawater still[5] or chemical desalinator kit now replaced by a hand pumped reverse osmosis desalinator (MROD) for desalinating seawater, a raft repair kit, a paddle, a bailer and sponge, sunscreen, medical equipment, a whistle, a compass, and a sun shade hat.

The US Army uses several basic survival kits, mainly for aviators, some of which are stored in carrying bags. Aviators in planes with ejection seats have survival kits in a vest and the seat pan, the survival vest worn by US helicopter crews also contains some basic survival items.

Spacecraft kits[edit]

Astronauts are provided with survival kits due to the difficulty of predicting where a spacecraft will land on its return to earth, especially in the case of an equipment failure. In early US space flights, the kit was optimised for survival at sea; the one provided for John Glenn on the first American orbital space flight in Friendship 7 contained “a life raft, pocket knife, signaling mirror, shark repellent, seawater desalting tablets, sunscreen, soap, first aid kit, and other items”.[6] A survival kit was provided for the Apollo program which was “…designed to provide a 48-hour postlanding (water or land) survival capability for three crewmen between 40 degrees North and South latitudes”.[7] It contained “a survival radio, a survival light assembly, desalter kits, a machete, sunglasses, water cans, sun lotion, a blanket, a pocket knife, netting and foam pads”.[8]

The kits provided for Soviet and Russian Cosmonauts are optimised for survival in the temperate and sub-arctic mountains, forests and grasslands in the east of the country. Soyuz spacecraft kits include “food rations, water bottles, warm clothing, rope for making a shelter using the capsule’s parachute, fish hooks and miscellaneous other survival gear”. The TP-82 Cosmonaut survival pistol, was provided to defend against predators such as wolves or bears. It was able to fire conventional bullets, shotgun cartridges and flares; the folding stock could be used as a shovel and it also had a fold-out machete.[9]

Mini survival kits[edit]

Main article: Mini survival kit
“Mini survival kits” or “Altoids tin” survival kits are small kits that contain a few basic survival tools. These kits often include a small compass, waterproof matches, minimum fishing tackle, large plastic bag, small candle, jigsaw blade, craft knife or scalpel blade, and/or a safety pin/s. Pre-packaged survival kits may also include instructions in survival techniques, including fire-starting or first aid methods. In addition, parachute cord can be wrapped around the tin. The parachute cord can be used for setting up an emergency shelter or snaring small animals. They are designed to fit within a container roughly the size of a mint tin.

Fire making kit contained in tin
Other small kits are wearable and built into everyday carry survival bracelets or belts. Most often these are paracord bracelets with tools woven inside. Several tools such as firestarter, buckles, whistles and compass are on the exterior of the gear and smaller tools are woven inside the jewelry or belt and only accessible by taking the bracelet apart.

Lightweight survival kits are generally seen as a backup means of survival; however, these can kits can be extensive, and have come to include tools that are generally found in larger kits as survival technology advances. Some examples of these tools are high power flashlights, rapid use saws, signal devices such as mini signal mirrors, and water purification methods.

Vehicle kits[edit]

Another level in some preparedness plans are Vehicle Kits. In some cases, supplies and equipment may be loaded into vehicle such as a van or truck with bicycle racks and an extra “reserve” gas tank. Some survivalists also carry a small (e.g., 250 cc) off-road-capable motorcycle in the van or truck.

Food supplies in a bug-out vehicle include hundreds of pounds of wheat, rice, and beans, and enough honey, powdered milk, canned goods, bottled fruit, vitamins, dehydrated fruits and vegetables, salt, pepper, spices, and oil for several months. In addition, the kits often contain high-calorie energy bars, a cooking kit, utensils, liquid soap, and towels. The water supplies may include bottled water, filtering kit, bottles, collapsible water containers, and chlorine bleach for water purification. Food preparation and washing equipment may include items such as a grain grinder, a bread mixer, a strainer, a manual can opener, a steam canner with canning jars and O-rings, cutlery, knives, an electric 12-volt cooler icebox, kerosene lamps and heaters, kerosene or propane stoves, extra fuel, a clothes wringer, a foot-operated treadle sewing machine, and an electric hot plate (which would require an inverter to operate off a car battery).

The medical supplies may include a blood pressure gauge, stethoscope, scissors, tweezers, forceps, disposable scalpels, two thermometers (oral and rectal), inflatable splints, bandages, sutures, adhesive tape, gauze, burn ointment, antibiotic ointment, aspirin, rubbing alcohol, ipecac syrup, sterile water, cotton rags, soap, and cotton swabs.

The transportation items may include bicycles with off-road tires and suspension, emergency tools and spare auto parts (e.g., fuses, fan belts, light bulbs, head light, tire pump, etc.), and an inflatable raft with paddles.

In addition, the kits may contain typical individual “survival kit” items, such as nylon tarps, extra clothes and coats, blankets, sleeping bags, matches or other fire starting equipment, a compass and maps, flashlights, toilet paper, soap, a pocket knife and bowie knife, a fishing kit, a portable camping stove, a power inverter, backpack, paper and pencil, a signaling mirror, whistle, cable saw, bleach, insect repellent, magnifying glass, rope and nylon cord, pulleys, and a pistol and ammunition.

The communications equipment may include a multi-band receiver/scanner, a citizens band (CB) radio, portable “walkie-talkies” with rechargeable batteries, and a portable battery-powered television. The power supplies may include a diesel or gasoline generator with a one-month fuel supply, an auto battery and charger, extension cord, flashlights, rechargeable batteries (with recharger), an electric multi meter, and a test light. Defense items include a revolver, semi-automatic pistol, rifle, shotgun, ammunition, mace or pepper spray, and a large knife such as a KA-BAR or a bowie knife.

Tools may include cutting tools such as saws, axes and hatchets; mechanical advantage aids such as a pry bar or wrecking bar, ropes, pulleys, or a ‘come-a-long” hand-operated winch; construction tools such as pliers, chisels, a hammer, screwdrivers, a hand-operated twist drill, vise grip pliers, glue, nails, nuts, bolts, and screws; mechanical repair tools such as an arc welder, an oxy-acetylene torch, a propane torch with a spark lighter, a solder iron and flux, wrench set, a nut driver, a tap and die set, a socket set, and a fire extinguisher. As well, some survivalists bring barterable items such as fishing line, liquid soap, insect repellent, light bulbs, can openers, extra fuels, motor oil, and ammunition.

Natural disasters[edit]

The US government’s Homeland Security website provides a list of in-home emergency kit items.[10] The list focuses on the basics of survival: fresh water, food, clean air and materials to maintain body warmth. These basic survival items comprised into a kit are known as a Bug-out bag. The recommended basic emergency kit items include:

  • Water, at least one gallon of water per person for each day for drinking & sanitation (should be rotated every 3 months)
  • Food, non-perishable food for at least three days which is not required to be cooked or refrigerated
  • Emergency food bars, preferably products with 2,400 or 3,600 calories and contain no coconut or tropical oils to which many people may have an allergic reaction, in addition to non-perishable food which does not require cooking or refrigeration
  • Battery- or hand-powered radio with the Weather band
  • LED type flashlight (battery- or hand-powered)
  • Extra batteries for anything needing them, lithium type is preferred for shelf life
  • First aid kit
  • Copies of any medical prescriptions
  • Whistle to signal
  • Dust mask, plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter in place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off water valves
  • Can opener for canned food

  • Extra batteries (lithium type for longest shelf life).
  • Goggles and dust mask
  • A personal commode with sanitary bags
  • Water: one gallon per person, per day

Hurricane[edit]

For hurricanes, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recommends that the ‘disaster bag’ include:[13]

  • A flashlight with spare batteries and
  • A battery operated portable radio (and spare batteries);
  • A battery operated NOAA weather radio (and spare batteries);
  • A “Self Powered Radio” and a “Self Powered Flashlight”. One, “Eton” model has the Weather Band and it is “self powered”. Some of these will keep your cell phone charged

  • Prescription medicines (be sure to refill them once they expire);
  • Cash and a credit card;
  • A cell phone with a fully charged spare battery;
  • Spare keys;
  • High energy non-perishable food;
  • One warm blanket or sleeping bag per person;
  • Special items for infant, elderly or disabled family members;
  • Change of clothing.

Bug-out bags / Survival Backpacks[edit]

Main article: Bug-out bag
The term “survival kit” may also refer to the larger, portable survival kits prepared by survivalists, called “bug-out bags” (BOBs), “Personal Emergency Relocation Kits” (PERKs) or “get out of Dodge” (GOOD) kits, which are packed into backpacks, or even duffel bags. These kits are designed specifically to be more easily carried by the individual in case alternate forms of transportation are unavailable or impossible to use.

These bags contain supplies such as food, water purification equipment, clothing, medical equipment, communications gear, and tools.

‘Cobra Kai’ Cast Talk Season 3 and ‘The Karate Kid Part II’ Characters’ Return

If you’ve been a fan of Cobra Kai since its days as a YouTube series, then the wait for Season 3 has been a long one, given Season 2 debuted back in April 2019. But while we can’t know the exact numbers thanks to the murkiness of streaming viewership, it is clear the fanbase has exploded ever since the show’s first two seasons debuted to terrific response on Netflix this past August, and those new fans are now also incredibly excited to get more episodes of the newly branded Netflix Original series on January 1.

The new season picks up in the aftermath of the massive high school karate brawl that ended Season 2, while also bringing back some major characters from The Karate Kid franchise’s history that have yet to be seen on the series. Stars Ralph Macchio (“Daniel LaRusso”) and William Zabka (“Johnny Lawrence”) and their costars spoke about what to expect this season and the ongoing appeal of these characters, more than 35 years after they were introduced.

Back to Okinawa

'The Karate Kid Part II's Chozen (Yuji Okumoto) and Kumiko (Tamlyn Tomita) return in Cobra Kai: Season 3

Daniel returns to Mr. Miyagi’s childhood home, Okinawa, in Season 3, and is reunited with two pivotal characters from 1986’s The Karate Kid Part II in the process, his old flame, Kumiko (Tamlyn Tomita), and his old enemy, Chozen (Yuji Okumoto).

When it came to incorporating The Karate Kid Part II’s characters into Cobra Kai, Ralph Macchio said, “That’s what our creators do such a great job in crafting, is embracing that nostalgia and then using it – in the case of Season 3 to inform LaRusso about things about Miyagi, things that he didn’t even know about Mr. Miyagi, and reconnecting with those great characters and those wonderful actors, Tamlyn and Yuji.”

Elaborating on what it was like to finally be sharing scenes with Tomita and Okumoto again, over three decades after The Karate Kid Part II opened, Macchio said, “It’s the same thing that happened with Billy [Zabka]. There’s just some element of… There’s a spirit and a connection between those actors, all of us, that were part of what The Karate Kid has become which is way bigger than us as actors, you know? It’s so well embraced around the world. Tamlyn and Yuji, I maintain a friendship with [them] and every couple of years we connect in some way, but as far as being in each other’s presence for that amount of time, it was like being a teenager again with Tamlyn, that stuff was just so angelic and that kind of [feeling] –– it’s been five minutes and 30 years at the same time and that was sort of wonderful and then the Chozen character, what would that be? And how that informs even the LaRusso/Lawrence of it all later on… Yuji knocked it out of the park, and Tamlyn, and all the characters that we bring back from the past.”

Added Macchio, “I love tapping into The Karate Kid Part II of it because that was really Miyagi’s land, and we got to go to Okinawa [for Cobra Kai] and shoot those exteriors, which was so special. We were sort of having that and Miyagi shine a light on the show and I think that’s a nice balance to a lot of the other plot-driven action stuff as well.”

One of the most iconic elements of The Karate Kid Part II is Miyagi’s drum technique, which Daniel uses to defeat Chozen. Said Mary Mouser, who plays Daniel’s daughter, Samantha LaRusso, “The drum technique is fun and exciting because it’s another aspect that we get to kind of pull into this – these fantastical elements that get pulled into the real world and see how they would theoretically be applied in a real fight. In my mind, the drum technique still comes back to the hallmarks of Miyagi-Do, which is about balance and about equal movement and things like that.”

FALLOUT

Xolo Maridueña as Miguel Diaz in Cobra Kai Season 3

Season 3 picks up in the immediate aftermath of Season 2, which ended with Miguel (Xolo Maridueña) badly injured by Robby (Tanner Buchanan) in the wake of the giant school fight that broke out and when Season 3 begins, it’s uncertain if Miguel will be able to walk, much less do karate again.

When filming that school fight sequence, Maridueña recalled them deciding on the day they were shooting it, “How dark this ending was going to be. Was it going to be an ending where Robby looked back and knew he was kicking Miguel that hard, or was it truly an accident? That was a big question that we were asking that day and that Tanner was definitely freaking out about, like, ‘But he’s not a bad guy right? It was an accident, he didn’t see!’ And so I think on that day we kind of figured it out and found a really good medium in between it being an accident and it just being a rage-filled kick. I was a little nervous at first reading the scripts but also, I trust our creators, Jon [Hurwitz], Josh [Heald] and Hayden [Schlossberg] so much. They definitely have a great way of making things come around full circle.”

Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso and Mary Mouser as Samantha LaRusso in Cobra Kai Season 3

Along with some nasty cuts, Sam meanwhile has a lot of emotional pain to try and work through, after finding herself attacked so brutally by Tory (Peyton List) at the end of Season 2, who truly was out for blood. Said Mouser, of playing Sam’s trauma in Season 3, “That was really important to me. I was really excited when they first talked to me about where we were going after the Season 2 ending. I remember once we wrapped, we all kind of looked at each other like ‘Alright, what’s next? Where do you go from here?’ And I remember the [showrunners] being like, ‘You know, it’s not over. We blew it up and we’re gonna have to put it back together and we’re gonna see how that goes.’ It was really important to me though that it was as honest as can be and I think it was great that all of Season 3 kind of went deeper and darker into the heart and emotion side in addition to keeping the fun, and the lightness, and the badassery. So I was excited to get to kind of sink my teeth into that and show Samantha healing in all of the ugly ways that you heal from something that traumatic. It was really important to me to play it as honestly as possible and its aspects of things I can relate to really strongly with my own life, so it was fun and not so fun and therapeutic and cleansing and good and I’m excited to see how people respond to it.”

Meanwhile, Jacob Bertrand (Eli “Hawk” Moskowitz) said that in Season 3, in the wake of Kreese fully taking control of Cobra-Kai, “Hawk is really trying to find himself and who he is under the new Cobra Kai that is lead by Kreese. I think even in Season 2 you start to see how Kreese is sort of digging his fangs into Hawk and manipulating him in some ways and pushing him to vandalize Miyagi-Do and do all these things. There’s a lot more of that in Season 3.”

AS TIME GOES BY

(L-R) Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso, Martin Kove as John Kreese, and William Zabka as Johnny Lawrence in Cobra Kai Season 3

Macchio and Zabka are obviously both quite a bit older than when they made The Karate Kid, but when it comes to still doing fight scenes, Zabka said, “I love it. I love doing the fights. When we have proper time to rehearse and to train and to choreograph, it’s great. We’re always hoping for at least one good fight but we also like to leave it to the younger guys to carry the weight on that, as Ralph says. But yeah, you know, you’re stretching a little bit longer, and it takes a little longer to get the kicks high and to calibrate your spins and all that but it’s a real fun part of it. The physicality of the characters is part of their character, so to get to express yourself in that way, it’s awesome.”

Said Macchio, “Yeah, everything takes longer and hurts more but you do the proper prep time and you know you gotta be careful because you’re doing things over and over and at high speed. We don’t have the time that like we had when we made the original film, so that’s the most concerning thing is that we have those time constraints and we have to pound through them quickly and you just have to really remain focused and spend a lot of time stretching before, during, and after. And you know, a little Ibuprofen by the bedside…”

When Macchio and Zabka began playing Daniel and Johnny, the characters were high school students, and the two were asked if they themselves ever felt like they were still in high school.

Replied Zabka, “I tell my kids, ‘I’m just a big kid, man.’ Who wants to grow up, you know? We polish our past, I think. Those times — high school, early college, the friendships you make, the bonds you make, the music you heard, the experiences you had — those things stick with you forever, you know? As you get older things get a little choppier and we’re just getting through. There’s something solid about that time so to feel that way and to get to play that character and to represent that time brings it all back to the surface in a way that makes you feel like a big kid, which I love.”

Said Macchio, “Playing characters that have stood the test of time as adolescents and a piece of our childhood, it certainly leads me to feel that I lead a unique existence because very often I’ll meet people and they’ll want to talk about that time or that place for them. So you sort of represent youth in a way because our characters have resonated for thirty, nearly forty years. It sounds ridiculous to hear those words but that is the truth and so I embrace it now because, you know, growing up is overrated so let’s stay young and this show allows us to do that.”

He added with a laugh, “Sometimes it’s tougher when they cut out of a flashback to present day. It reminds me that some time has gone by, but for the most part it’s fun. It’s a fun existence.”

Cobra Kai Season 3 premieres January 1 on Netflix.

The Best Nordic Trails in the U.S.

“The cross-country ski industry is expecting a significant increase in skiers this season, based on the increased interest in outdoor activities,” says Reese Brown, executive director of the Cross Country Ski Areas Association. But don’t worry: there’s plenty of room for everyone to spread out. If you’ve never considered cross-country skiing before, this might be the winter you do. It’s a good way to get outside and explore local areas, and it’s naturally a crowd-free activity. While you can ski through the woods on your own, a designated cross-country ski area comes with grooming, trail maps, gear rental, and instruction. Either way, picture empty trails through a wide-open forest and, unlike downhill ski resorts, little in the ways of lines, lodges, and costly tickets. Here are seven of our favorite places to enjoy this sport.

Tahoe XC

Tahoe City, California

Tahoe XC (day tickets from $36) isn’t the biggest area on this list—it offers around 30 miles of groomed trails, about a quarter the size of better-known Royal Gorge, 45 minutes away—but it’s full of character and charm. Located in Tahoe City, California, it’s about three and a half hours from San Francisco. From the top of the Lakeview climb, you’ll earn a panoramic view of North America’s largest alpine lake and a wooden bench to catch your breath on. You’ll find three warming huts, snowshoe-specific trails, and six miles of dog-friendly trails. The homemade chocolate chip cookies normally available from a jar in the lodge will be served to go this year.

Devil’s Thumb Ranch

(Photo: Courtesy Devil’s Thumb Ranch)

Tabernash, Colorado

The best way to explore the 75 miles of cross-country ski trails at Devil’s Thumb Ranch is by staying on the property. The resort has 15 private cabins of various sizes, as well as lodge rooms (from $279). Spa treatments like massages and body soaks are currently being offered for lodge guests only, with COVID-19 protocols in place. But you don’t need to be an overnight guest to enjoy the trails, which are open to day visitors for a $30 ticket. Gear rental and instruction can be added. There’s also the option of fat-tire biking on the trails, as the resort offers bike rentals and guided outings. You’re just 20 minutes from downhill skiing at Winter Park Resort and less than two hours from Denver.

Methow Trails

methow-trails-nordic_h.jpg
(Photo: Courtesy Methow Trails)

Winthrop, Washington

It’ll take you four hours to get to Methow Valley from Seattle, but it’s worth the haul. This remote corner of northern Washington looks like Switzerland, with its jagged, snowy peaks. Home to the largest cross-country ski area in North America, Methow Trails boasts more than 125 miles of trails (day tickets from $25; those under 17 or over 75 ski for free). Sections of the system allow fat-tire biking, snowshoeing, and skiing with your dog. The slopeside Rendezvous Huts—which you can connect for a hut-to-hut ski experience—get booked months in advance. Instead, check out the six sleek, architect-designed Rolling Huts (from $145), nine miles northwest, or search for other lodging in the nearby towns of Winthrop, Twisp, or Mazama.

Theodore Wirth Regional Park

Minneapolis, Minnesota

You won’t find better cross-country skiing this close to a major metropolis. The extensive trail system within the state’s Theodore Wirth Regional Park (day tickets from $20) has over 20 miles of trails that weave through secluded woods, all with views of the Minneapolis skyline. The Loppet Foundation, a partner of the park, offers cross-country ski lessons for all ages. A World Cup cross-country ski event was slated to take place here last March—it would have been the first Nordic World Cup in the U.S. in nearly two decades—but was canceled due to COVID-19.

Galena Lodge

galena-lodge-nordic-trails_h.jpg
(Photo: Courtesy Galena Lodge)

Ketchum, Idaho

You’ll come to Idaho’s Galena Lodge (day tickets from $18) for the cross-country skiing—there are over 30 miles of perfectly groomed trails through a stunning section of Sawtooth National Forest—but you’ll stay for the food. The house restaurant serves up steaming bowls of curry, soup, and chili, plus European-style charcuterie platters and freshly baked pastries. This winter there will also be a food truck in a vintage camper offering easy grab-and-go service. Stay in a yurt on the property (from $150) or in the nearby town of Ketchum. Downhill skiing at Sun Valley is just 30 minutes away.

Green Woodlands

Dorchester, New Hampshire

There is so much to love about Green Woodlands, a plot of private land between the towns of Lyme and Dorchester, New Hampshire, about two hours north of Boston. The family that runs the Green Woodlands Foundation has opened the land up to mountain bikers in the summer and nordic skiers in the winter, grooming about 30 miles of trails and stocking four warming huts with hot chocolate. There’s no fee to ski here—all that’s asked of you is a positive attitude on the trail. Skis and boots are even loaned out for free via an honor system. The trails were designed by a longtime Dartmouth College ski coach and Olympic biathlete named John Morton.

Meissner Nordic

Bend, Oregon

You can also ski for free at Meissner Nordic, a trail network on U.S. Forest Service land 14 miles west of Bend, along the Cascade Lakes Highway en route to the Mount Bachelor Ski Area. You will need a $4 Sno-Park permit to park here, though, and donations for trail use are encouraged. The club that maintains the area also stocks the trailside warming huts with firewood. Show up for a full-moon night ski, when the trails are lined with candle-lit luminary bags, or opt for the free learn-to-ski days, where volunteers teach lessons and local ski shops hand out courtesy rentals.

Journey to the Center of the Earth

The world’s most mysterious cave is difficult to reach.

To get to Cueva de los Tayos—Cave of the Oilbirds—drive east out of Ecuador’s capital city of Quito for eight hours along narrow, potholed roads that twist through cloudforest above the Amazon Basin. Pull over outside the small town of Mendez, and walk a path to the bank of the muddy Santiago River, where you’ll see locals hauling 150-pound bushels of bananas on their shoulders. Lower yourself into a long wooden canoe and glide past cascading waterfalls to the start of a dirt trail. Hike five hours in the humidity, over Puntilla de Coangos mountain, then up to the summit of Bocana de Coangos. The trail ends at a clearing with three thatch huts, home to a dozen Shuar, the ancient tribe that guards the cave.

The Shuar are the Indigenous people of the region, legendary warriors known for shamanism and for shrinking the heads of their enemies. Tayos beckons from deep inside territory that is managed and protected by the tribe, and visitors must take great care when navigating the local politics and customs. Theo Toulkaridis, a geology professor and researcher at the University of the Armed Forces in Ecuador, who is a leading expert on Tayos, learned this the hard way in 2014. After a few days exploring the cave, he climbed out to find 20 angry Shuar waiting for him. Toulkaridis had hired local guides, but other Shuar were upset that they had not been hired as well. “My guide hugged me close and whispered, ‘Don’t resist,’” Toulkaridis recalls. Then a Shuar woman whipped him with a belt.

Tayos is named for the brown-feathered, hook-billed nocturnal birds that dwell inside the cave alongside thousands of bats. The birds act a lot like bats, spending their days in darkness and heading out at night to forage for fruit. They’re called oilbirds because of their fatty chicks, which the Shuar capture and reduce to oil. The cave is also rumored to contain artifacts of a lost civilization. A 1972 bestselling book by Swiss author Erich von Däniken, called The Gold of the Gods, claimed that Tayos held carved passageways and a “metal library” of tablets written in an unknown language. Von Däniken has long believed that aliens once inhabited the earth, and the tablets fit his theory that extraterrestrials helped ancient people evolve. The notion has been criticized as pseudoscientific and racist, attributing the achievements of now marginalized earthlings to interlopers from space. Yet it spawned a cottage industry of books, conventions, and TV shows, including the History Channel’s Ancient Aliens, which premiered in 2010 and is one of the network’s most popular programs.

A couple of years after The Gold of the Gods was published, the late Scottish explorer Stan Hall assembled a team of 100 scientists, cavers, British and Ecuadorean military personnel, and, remarkably, astronaut Neil Armstrong, who served as a figurehead, and led them into Tayos to unravel the mystery. What they found astonished them. Deep inside, in spots where it would have been impossible to lug machinery, there were stone passageways that appeared to have been cut at right angles and then polished. They also discovered a burial site dating back to 1500 B.C.

“The cadaver, as if surprised by the sudden intrusion after so many lonely centuries, crumbled to dust when touched,” Hall writes in Tayos Gold, his book about the expedition. Though the team didn’t find the metal library, Armstrong put the adventure “up there with the moon landing.”

Beyond that, only a small number of intrepid hikers, wide-eyed UFO believers, and even a team of researchers from Brigham Young University—who believed that the metal tablets might be linked to the Mormon faith—have made it inside. The cave has also attracted interest from geologists and archaeologists, who have mapped portions using 3D technology to better understand its scope. (Roughly four miles of the cave have been mapped so far, but an estimated three miles remain.) Toulkaridis calls it “a natural laboratory which is fundamentally untouched.”

To enter Tayos, you need more than the permission of the Shuar. You also need a blessing from the cave itself. I learn this late one starry night in August of 2019, in Kuankus, the tiny Shuar settlement, which is located about one mile uphill from Tayos. Getting here has been a brutal ten-hour slog in sweltering heat. The trek included crossing a rickety rope bridge high above the rapids and trudging in mud through thick jungle loaded with giant black bullet ants, so named because being bit by one feels like being shot. The plan is to stay in Kuankus for the night, then enter the cave with our Shuar guides the next morning.

I’m here with a small team led by Eileen Hall, Stan Hall’s 34-year-old half-Scottish, half-Ecuadoran daughter, who continued her father’s quest to understand the true history and power of the cave after he died of prostate cancer in 2008. Eileen, who lives in London, is artistic and spiritual, a former architect who now conducts what she calls energy-healing work with private clients. Along with another architect, Tamsin Cunningham, she is also a cofounder of Tayos, a company that explores the cave through writing, music, and meditation. Today, with her long brown hair in a ponytail, she’s dressed in a black Ecuadorean shirt, long gray hiking pants, and blue rubber boots caked in mud. This is her fourth expedition to the cave. When I ask her what I should expect, she tells me that Tayos is “a psychedelic experience.”

After sipping from a wooden bowl of chicha, a chalky, alcoholic drink made from fermented yuca (prepared by women who chew it and then spit into the bowl), we gather with the Shuar around a campfire. A shaman—a stout, middle-aged woman with long, dark hair—leads us through the permission ceremony. We hold hands while in Spanish she thanks the stars, the moon, the earth. She removes a smoldering log from the fire, waving its smoke behind each of us in a blessing. Finally, we take turns asking for permission from Arutam, the all-powerful force in the Shuar religion, to enter Tayos. After a few moments of silence, the shaman tells us that the spirit has allowed us inside what she calls “the womb of the earth.”
